use a single Webpack/TypeScript build Previously, there were 2 Webpack and TypeScript builds: in `.` and `./enterprise`. This was because these used to live in separate repositories. Now that they are in the same repository, we can combine them. The benefit of combining them is reduced complexity and duplication. The work to combine the builds consisted of: - Removing all Webpack/TypeScript build config files from `enterprise/`, such as `tsconfig.json`, `webpack.config.ts`, `package.json`, etc. - Rewriting import paths in `enterprise/**/*.ts?(x)` to use relative file paths instead of importing from `@sourcegraph/webapp`. - Removing all `dist`-related tasks from the root build config. (These were only used to export a package that `enterprise/` could use in its separate build.) In combining the builds, some additional changes were required: - Upgraded Webpack and various Webpack-related packages. - Switched back to the now-recommended (no longer deprecated) webpack-dev-server from webpack-serve. - Removed the node-sass-import-once helper because (1) it did not appear to be effective and (2) it resulted in a ModuleNotFoundError when importing a `.css` file in a dependency that itself imported a `.css` file with a relative path. (The usual solution for this is to use resolve-url-loader, but that is incompatible with node-sass-import-once. The reason this problem started occurring now is likely due to upgrading sass-loader or related packages, and that was necessitated by other errors that are not worth describing here.) - Remove thread-loader. It did not actually speed up Webpack build times.

remove gulp (task runner) (#57963) Removed usage of gulp for running commands. Instead, we just use `package.json` scripts (that mostly invoke `ts-node -T ...`). The purpose of removing gulp is to remove a layer of duplication/indirection between the tasks we need to run and where they are defined. The code generation tasks (GraphQL operations, CSS modules types, and schema/ JSON Schema types) no longer run in watch mode in local dev. If you make changes that require regeneration of this code, run `pnpm run generate` from the root. This is for simplicity and speed (they would run on many unrelated changes and slow down local dev).

use esbuild for client/web builds (#57365) Use [esbuild](https://esbuild.github.io/) instead of Webpack for builds of `client/web`, for faster builds (dev and prod) and greater dev-prod parity. This PR completely removes all use of Webpack in this repository. `client/web` is the last build target that still uses Webpack; all others have been recently migrated to esbuild. Most devs here have been using esbuild for local dev of `client/web` for the last 6-12 months anyway. The change here is that now our production builds will be built by esbuild. All sg commands, integration/e2e tests, etc., continue to work as-is. The bundlesize report will take a while to stabilize because the new build products use different filenames. ## Benchmarks Running `pnpm run generate && time pnpm -C client/web run task:gulp webBuild` and taking the `time` output from the last command: - Webpack: 62.5s - esbuild: 6.7s Note: This understates esbuild's victory for 2 reasons: (1) because esbuild is building both the main and embed entrypoints, whereas Webpack only builds the main entrypoint in this benchmark) and (2) because a lot of it is in the fixed startup time of `gulp`; esbuild incremental rebuilds during local dev only take ~1s. ## Notes We no longer use Babel to produce web builds (we use esbuild), so we don't need any Babel plugins that optimize the output or improve browser compatibility. Right now, Babel is only used by Jest (for tests) and by Bazel as an intermediate step.

app: experimental Tauri branch (#50620) This is experimental support for building the Cody App using Tauri. For an overview of what Tauri is and why I think it will help us with the App, see [this Slack message](https://sourcegraph.slack.com/archives/C04F9E7GUDP/p1680729850086159). ### Developing To try it out, checkout this branch and then in two separate terminals run: ``` sg start app ``` ``` go build \ -o .bin/backend-aarch64-apple-darwin \ -tags dist \ -ldflags '-X github.com/sourcegraph/sourcegraph/internal/conf/deploy.forceType=app' \ ./enterprise/cmd/sourcegraph pnpm tauri dev ``` This will open a Tauri window connected to your dev server. Support multiple GraphQL schema files (#20077) This PR adjusts all configs/generators/linters that we use to support multiple `.graphql` files to be stitched together for the final schema. This should help a bit with the MASSIVE `schema.graphql` file that has grown to around 10k loc by now, by encapsulating different fields of concern into separate files. Using the `extend` keyword, there is nothing that cannot be expressed with separate files that could have been with a single file, so there are no drawbacks to this method, that I'm aware of. In a follow-up PR, I will restructure the backend code for this a bit and make it so the enterprise schema is not used in OSS (which gives better introspection, because there is less noise from fields that aren't accessible because OSS) and doesn't require us to implement a `defaultXXResolver`.

[experiment] Merge SvelteKit prototype into main (#47238) This PR merges my prototype branch into main to make it easier to iterate on the prototype and for others to contribute to it. It adds a new web frontend under `client/web-sveltekit`. I've been trying to make as little changes to the existing code base as possible to make the initial merge simple. I made some small changes to make it easier to reuse some functions. Most importantly I'm trying to limit the "exposure" others might have to the prototype by importing any dependencies from other `@sourcegraph/*` packages into a few select TypeScript files (e.g. `src/lib/shared.ts`). This way the risk of others having to work with Svelte is mitigated to some degree. The prototype implements the following pages (also see file structure under `src/routes/`): - Search home page - Search result page - Repo pages: root, file, tree, commits, branches, tags, contributors, commit It's configured to run as a client side application, without pre- or server-side rendering. You can run the development server via ```sh cd client/web-sveltekit pnpm run dev ``` The README file contains more information about running the development server, linter and formatter. sveltekit-prototype: Add separator component and setup storybook (#54674) This commit adds a simple separator component to be used for resizing panels (e.g. sidebars) and is used on file tree pages. The way the separator works is quite simple atm: It computes its position in relation to the size of the parent element and saves that value in the provided store. The parent component can use this value however it sees fit. The current value is persisted in local storage. I assume that this functionality will be expanded or changed in the future but it's a start. I also setup storybook 7, following the default setup instructions. I left everybody as default except for deleting the example stories it came with. We can always change the structure later. Initially I wasn't able to run `pnpm run storybook`, it was throwing an error about not being able to import `ts-dedent`. Adding it to the root `package.json` file seems to resolve this issue. use esbuild for client/web builds (#57365) Use [esbuild](https://esbuild.github.io/) instead of Webpack for builds of `client/web`, for faster builds (dev and prod) and greater dev-prod parity. This PR completely removes all use of Webpack in this repository. `client/web` is the last build target that still uses Webpack; all others have been recently migrated to esbuild. Most devs here have been using esbuild for local dev of `client/web` for the last 6-12 months anyway. The change here is that now our production builds will be built by esbuild. All sg commands, integration/e2e tests, etc., continue to work as-is. The bundlesize report will take a while to stabilize because the new build products use different filenames. ## Benchmarks Running `pnpm run generate && time pnpm -C client/web run task:gulp webBuild` and taking the `time` output from the last command: - Webpack: 62.5s - esbuild: 6.7s Note: This understates esbuild's victory for 2 reasons: (1) because esbuild is building both the main and embed entrypoints, whereas Webpack only builds the main entrypoint in this benchmark) and (2) because a lot of it is in the fixed startup time of `gulp`; esbuild incremental rebuilds during local dev only take ~1s. ## Notes We no longer use Babel to produce web builds (we use esbuild), so we don't need any Babel plugins that optimize the output or improve browser compatibility. Right now, Babel is only used by Jest (for tests) and by Bazel as an intermediate step.

Previous attempts at this didn't work reliably/satisfactory because both CodeMirror and Monaco would always select the first suggestion. If suggestions took a while to load and would juuuust appear when you where pressing Enter to _submit the query_ you would insert the first suggestion instead. @codemirror/autocomplete v6.1 introduces the option to _not_ select the first suggestion by default, avoiding this problem. However, since this changes how the query input works (users have to explicitly select an item before it be inserted), I'm putting this behind a feature flag. I'm also removing the "Tab" label from the selected suggestion. Use "Tab" to select still works as before. However I noticed an issue if multiple suggestions are shown, none is selected and "Tab" is pressed: The suggestions popover closes, neither is a cursor visible nor is the next button selected. It looks like `<body>` receives the focus which is weird. The user can't easily go back to the input, only by clicking into it. Even worse, the query input still appears to be focused. I can't replicate this on https://codemirror.net/try/ so maybe it's some something weird with our setup. Given that the feature is behind a flag, I think it's still safe to continue with this.

Instead the search context is treated like any other filter, except we style it slightly differently (see video). This diff does a couple of things: - Adds support for value completion for the context: filter. - Renders context: filters differently from other filters in the input. - Refactors the whole suggestions implementation so that it will be easier to add new suggestion sources in the future. - Introduces a custom version of the built-in placeholder extension that allows us to overwrite when/how the placeholder should be visible. Add fuzzy file finder with keyboard shortcut `t`. (#20921) Previously, there was no way to interactively search for a file that matches a given fuzzy query. This commit adds a new modal that activates on the keyboard shortcut `t` and allows the user to quickly open a file that fuzzily matches a given query. The implementation in this commit is specifically designed to handle large repositories with >100k source files. The fuzzy finder achieves low-latency by: 1) implementating all the filtering inside the browser on the client-side 2) using bloom filters to quickly discard buckets of filenames that are guaranteed to not match a given query. This technique is used by the Scala language server and documented in this blog post https://scalameta.org/metals/blog/2019/01/22/bloom-filters.html The downside of this approach: 1) it can take a while to first download all filenames in the repository, especially for large repos like chromium/chromium. It should be possible to optimize some parts of this on the backend. 2) the bloom filter algorithm is sometimes more strict compared to the fuzzy finder in VS Code and IntelliJ. There are techniques to make the fuzzy finder more fuzzy, for example we could make all-lowercase queries case-insensitive. It's also worth consider whether we want use a different filtering algorithm for smaller repositories (<25k source files)

search: Move query state out of root component state (#24844) This commit moves the "global" query state out of the state of the root component. Because the query state is updated on every keypress it caused excessive re-rendering of the whole application, which, depending on the page, causes massive performance issues. The query state isn't really "global", rather it's information that is needed by a handful of components rendered in different parts of the page. This commit adds https://zustand.surge.sh/ to make this data available to those components without impacting the overall application (also as a potential solution for other similar use cases).
